Is it just me or does everyone have hassle with plumbers etc? No need to answer that because I know everyone does but it seems we are being singled out for special treatment as another day passes with promises of work being done going unfulfilled. We are now having to turn business away because this bathroom is so delayed and I'm just preparing for the mother of all moans to the company doing the work...
On a brighter note my team Plymouth Argyle had a superb win away to Leicester on Saturday in a televised match on Sky. It was great putting one over on Ian Holloway who deserted Plymouth in November because Leicester was "a job I couldn't turn down." Needless to say there was much joy at this win and tonight we need to carry on the good work at home to Barnsley.
A busy week for me away from the B&B as I help out with the pantomime in Fowey for the Funnybone Theatre Group made up of local children. There are some real characters among the youngsters and I've enjoyed helping them by joining them on stage as one of the adults they need to perform Dick Whittington. It opens at Fowey Town Hall tomorrow night and is on for the rest of the week. There was drama at the dress rehearsal last night when a little girl ran off in tears just as she was about the go on stage but like a real trouper she returned for the finale and I'm sure she'll be great once the real thing starts.
Quiz night down at the Earl of Chatham tonight but I can't make it because of the football. A shame as we've won it for the last two weeks and we'll now be denied the hat trick.
Ta-ra for now!

Work in progress
Back on track with the new bathroom, with all hands on deck and hopefully it will be ready by the middle of next week at the latest. The bookings are coming in now, including for the weekend of the Oaks and Derby at Epsom in June, when I usually try to nip off for a couple of days at the races. That won't be possible this year because we already have two rooms taken for the weekend so I'll be restricted to watching it on the TV.
There's racing at Taunton today with a good race at 4.20. The favourite, Never So Blue, will be difficult to beat but I fancy Sir Laughalot as an each way option. I think he would have won last time at Huntingdon if he hadn't fallen at the second last when making his run and even though the handicapper has unjustifiably raised him 4lb I think he still has a good chance.

New season new bathroom
Welcome to a new blog all about the ins and outs of running a small B&B in Cornwall and life in general in this little corner of the globe.
The season begins soon (usually mid February) but we are in a touch of chaos at the moment with the installation of a new ensuite bathroom for one of our rooms (we only have three..) This should have been completed in the next couple of days but is going to over run by at least a week after problems with the electrician and the plumber getting here in good time to do their bits.
Ernie, the builder, is the only one who has done his part in good time but hopefully we will soon be back on track and ready to start receiving guests. In the meantime we have had the occasional guest staying in the one room not being affected by all the works and last weekend had an artist we know called Andrew White and his brother-in-law staying. They were down to deliver a painting commissioned by someone who lives nearby and we had a nice evening chatting about his work; we are very proud to own one of Andrew's paintings which enjoys pride of place over our fireplace.
Although he is a young artist he could not be further away from the Damien Hurst/Tracey Emin style of modern art. Instead he has been inspired by the great masters and British Victorian artists and is regarded as among the best of the modern day figurative artists. He is also a lover of the alternative breakfast which makes him an ideal guest for The Old Chapel where we show our love of breakfast with an ever increasing menu. The latest addition is the Terry-Thomas, named after the great film actor and to be found nowhere else in the world (unless someone else has had the same idea...!) It is actually quite a simple dish, with Gentleman's Relish spread on hot buttered toast and then topped with scrambled eggs and dusted with cayenne pepper.
Andrew said he thoroughly enjoyed his Terry-Thomas, as indeed he enjoyed his devilled kidneys on his last visit, while his brother-in-law, John, kept to a more traditional cooked breakfast. You will see as this blog unfolds that we are indeed great lovers of a good breakfast here at The Old Chapel although the proprietor and Mrs Proprietor are in fact both suffering the pain of dieting at the moment.
More of that later, suffice to say that Weight Watchers on a Monday night is no place for a chap who loves his food but so far nine pounds have been shed from the bulging waistline.
